One of the reasons to visit Novgorod-Siverskyi is to get firsthand view of ancient literature masterpiece “The Lay of Igor’s Warfare”.
The main storyline of the work is a campaign of Novgorod-Siverskyi Prince Igor against Polovtsian that is a real historical fact. Discovered more then 200 years ago the masterpiece still keeps many secrets and mysteries.
The museum was founded in 1990 as the first state institution in Ukraine studying the “The Lay of Igor’s Warfare”. The exhibition includes former through present day editions of the monument, its translations into foreign languages; archaeological finds of Kievan Rus’ period; image and works of art, sculpture, etc.
The museum is a part of the reserve of the same name. The basis of the reserve is located in the Transfiguration Monastery founded in the eleventh century. From that times brick foundation of Our Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral and the remains of princely chamber has left., The monastery had been changing its architectural appearance several times during its long history. The final look it obtained during the XVI-XIX centuries.
Beside the Monastery the Museum and Reserve also includes such architectural monuments of Novgorod-Siverskyi: the Assumption Cathedral (XVII), St. Nicholas Church (1760), Triumphal arch (XVIII) Shopping malls and stores (end of XVIII).
